Angelica Owens, whose pin name is Angel Ray, is originally from Memphis, TN, and hails from a lineage of entrepreneurial pioneers, tracing back to her late great-great-grandfather, Robert R. Booker, who played a pivotal role as one of the founders of the Church of God in Christ.
Angel Ray's remarkable creativity and attention to detail were evident from her early childhood, even in kindergarten. She fondly remembers crafting short stories about two best friends: a bunny named Skipper and a fox named Hopper. Over the years, her passion for storytelling flourished, leading to numerous opportunities in the writing field.
At the age of 16, she wrote and self-published her debut collection of short stories titled Some Parents Just Don’t Understand, Book 1: Four Real Stories About Real Teens and Real Issues. This work was inspired by her role as a confidante to her peers, capturing their experiences that were often overlooked by parents and guardians.
From 2012 to 2014, Angel Ray organized three benefit fashion shows in Memphis, TN, titled Lights, Camera, STRUT! Each event contributed a portion of the proceeds to a local non-profit youth organization.
By the time she turned 18, Angel Ray released Some Parents Just Don’t Understand, Book 2, which features eight additional stories aimed at fostering healthy communication between parents and teenagers as they navigate their personal growth. In 2016, Angel Ray gave birth to her son, Trey, which inspired her blog series: A is for Anxiety. The blog series takes a deep dive into Angel Ray's journey with anxiety and postpartum depression. Her narratives resonate not only with her contemporaries but also with older audiences, as she candidly explores her struggles with mental health.
Angel Ray graduated from Rust College with a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication and a concentration in Broadcast Journalism. During her collegiate career, Angel Ray was crowned Miss Mass Communications in 2016. She joined the Theta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in the Fall of 2017 and became President of the chapter in 2018. She, along with 4 other founding members, started the Rust College Speech and Debate Team also in 2017 where she served as Captain for two years. Rust College hadn't had a debate team since 1993. Angel is proud to have collected many collegiate accolades during her time in college.
Most recently, in 2022, Angel produced her fourth event, the Glow Getter Fashion & Awards Show, in Holly Springs, MS. This show celebrated the two-year anniversary of Ray's Glow Sugar and expressed gratitude to her brand ambassadors for their support in achieving this milestone. The models showcased clothing designed by local Black entrepreneurs.
Angel Ray's journey in marketing commenced in 2018 when she took on the position of Social Media Manager at The Tri-State Defender, the oldest black-owned newspaper in Memphis. In 2020, just before the onset of the pandemic, she founded Ray's Glow Sugar and independently learned how to effectively manage and promote her website and small business. That same year, she earned a promotion to Marketing Assistant at Rust College, serving under the institution's first woman president, Dr. Ivy Taylor. By 2021, she advanced to the role of Marketing Coordinator and continued in that capacity until she transitioned to her current role as the Director of External Relations for the Ole Miss Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in 2023.
She will graduate with her M.S. degree in Integrated Marketing Communications from the University of Mississippi in May 2025.
