Hi, I’m Angelica Owens, but most people know me as Angel Ray, a name that reflects both my spirit and my story. Born and raised in Memphis, TN, I come from a powerful lineage of visionaries. My roots trace back to my late great-great-grandfather, Robert R. Booker, one of the original founders of the Church of God in Christ. That foundation of faith, leadership, and legacy runs through everything I do.
From an early age, I knew I was a storyteller. Even in kindergarten, I was writing whimsical tales about two unlikely best friends - a bunny named Skipper and a fox named Hopper. By 16, I self-published my first book, Some Parents Just Don’t Understand: Four Real Stories About Real Teens and Real Issues which is a collection born from the real-life confessions and quiet struggles of my peers. Two years later, I followed it up with Book 2, expanding the stories to deepen the conversation between parents and teens.
Between 2012 and 2014, I produced three benefit fashion shows in Memphis under the title Lights, Camera, STRUT!, using fashion as a platform for advocacy and community impact. Each show raised funds for youth-centered nonprofits, from women’s shelters to mentoring programs for young men.
In 2016, I became a mom to my son, Trey. His arrival shifted my entire world—and inspired my blog series A is for Anxiety, where I spoke openly about postpartum depression, anxiety, and navigating young motherhood. My goal was and still is to write truthfully for myself and for women like me who need to feel seen. I graduated from Rust College with a Bachelor’s in Mass Communication, concentrating in Broadcast Journalism. While there, I was crowned Miss Mass Communications, became President of the Theta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and helped re-establish the Rust College Speech & Debate Team, serving as its captain for two years after a 24-year hiatus. My years at Rust are filled with honors and growth I carry with me to this day.
My creative path has always intertwined with entrepreneurship. In 2020, I launched Ray’s Glow Sugar, a skincare brand born from the same creative fire I’ve carried my whole life. In 2022, I celebrated its two-year anniversary with the Glow Getter Fashion & Awards Show, honoring my brand ambassadors and spotlighting Black designers.
Professionally, my marketing journey began in 2018 at the historic Tri-State Defender, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in Memphis. From there, I rose through the ranks at Rust College, eventually becoming Marketing Coordinator. In 2023, I stepped into my current role as Director of External Relations at the Ole Miss Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, where I get to support Mississippi family business connect to resources provided by our Legacy Leadership Program. I received my Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications from the University of Mississippi in 2025.
Every story I write, brand I build, or event I produce is a reflection of who I am: a storyteller, a creative, a mama, a light-bringer, and a legacy-maker.
